Media Relations is part of the Communications department, and has a very close working relationship with Executive Directors. It operates a consultancy-style service for internal clients (mostly in marketing) and has regular contact with colleagues in head office in Madrid. The media team places a strong emphasis on developing good working relationships with journalists. Its key targets include banking correspondents, personal finance journalists and financial trade media. The work of the press office is around 70 per cent proactive and 30 per cent reactive.
This position will primarily cover Current Accounts and help to manage strategic announcements such as changes to relationships with third parties, senior management changes, redundancies, site closures etc. as well as managing the PR strategy for Santander's Current Account business. You'll develop annual PR plans for internal clients and different banking products, whilst regularly reviewing these. You'll manage media relationship-building programmes for key clients and the press team and when required, you will also deputise for the Head of Media Relations at meetings.
To succeed you must have experience of working in a press office for a major company and/or working in a PR agency with previous experience of strategic PR planning. You'll have exceptional people management experience with proven relationships with national newspaper journalists and enjoy dealing with them. You'll have enough gravitas to influence senior executives and senior journalists and be able to calculate risks of various strategies for dealing with any media issues. With newspaper standard written skills and excellent oral communications skills you will also be a self-driven individual who will take ownership for your work. Ideally you will have Financial Services experience.
